Description

Please join the City Club of Boise as we celebrate Elinor Chehey and the many contributions she made to vibrant political discussion in Idaho. Elinor is an avid community volunteer, church leader, and longtime member of the League of Women Voters of Idaho, having served as president and currently treasurer. Elinor Chehey is being honored with the City Club’s Dottie and Ed Stimpson Award for Civic Engagement for her decades-long role in promoting access to the polls and honest, civic political dialogue through the Idaho Debates and other League-sponsored events. Along with advocating for open government and frank conversation, she also helps the First Methodist Church congregation organize weekly meals for homeless and needy Boiseans, and serves on the board of Interfaith Sanctuary Housing Services.

But Elinor is best known among statewide candidates, media and political operatives as the deceptively quiet organizer and frequent timekeeper of countless debates and forums, unhesitant in reminding the state’s most powerful individuals of the rules set for each discussion and unafraid to signal their time to speak had come to an end.

The City Club will deliver the award in a virtual ceremony at noon on December 16th that will also serve to mark the club’s 25th anniversary. We've invited a few of the founding board members of City Club of Boise to join host Marcia Franklin, City Club president 2011-2012 and longtime member, live on Zoom during this program. We hope you'll be there, too!

The Dottie and Ed Stimpson Award for Civic Engagement celebrates the spirit of our founder, Dottie Stimpson, and her husband, Ed. The couple believed that no problem was so great that it couldn’t be solved by people with open minds, using civil discourse. Every year, the City Club of Boise honors one or more people or organizations that exemplify that conviction.

Past honorees include Dottie and Ed Stimpson, members of the Owyhee Initiative who helped pave the way for land preservation in Southwest Idaho, the second Idaho Citizens’ Reapportionment Commission in 2012 who overcame partisan wrangling to set Idaho’s political boundaries for a decade, longtime public servant and Idaho Secretary of State Ben Ysursa, Congressman Mike Simpson and Idaho Conservation League Executive Director Rick Johnson for their successful efforts to create the Boulder White Clouds Wilderness, former Boise State University President Bob Kustra, and beloved political expert, professor and television pundit Jim Weatherby.

City Club has partnered with City of Good to offer Boxes of Good for optional purchase and pickup from Bittercreek on December 16th. Registration for lunch has now closed, but free online registration is ongoing and will not close!

City of Good is a collective of socially-conscience restaurants and businesses working to solve some of our city's most pressing problems through innovative means. Our Weekend Fuel Kits Program is designed to help feed food-insecure children all weekend, every weekend. Partner restaurants are paid to create fresh, nutrient-dense meals, helping to ensure their culinary staff remains employed during this critical time of kitchen lay-offs and closures. They produce six meals for every kit, and meals are made with no less than 30% of locally-sourced ingredients, helping to protect our delicate local-farm ecosystem. Today, City of Good produces 150 meal kits weekly, helping to bridge the weekends when many vulnerable, hungry children within the Boise School District's Community Schools do not have access to school lunches or fresh, healthy food.
